Ramin “Sean” Pakbaz, M.D.

Founder

Dr. Sean Pakbaz M.D. is a neurointerventional radiologist who specializes in brain and spine disorders that are often difficult to treat with conventional medical or surgical procedures. In fact, he is recognized as a national leader in the use of minimally invasive techniques to treat brain aneurysms, brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM), and strokes.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Dr. Pakbaz has been involved in development and management of four separate comprehensive stroke programs.

His medical career started in Internal Medicine with plans to become an intensive care physician. During his second year of training in internal medicine, he did a rotation in the interventional radiology department with Dr. Roger Gonda and his career path changed. Dr. Pakbaz did continue to moonlight in the ICU for the next four years while finishing his radiology residency.

After interventional radiology residency, Dr. Pakbaz completed a Neuroradiology fellowship at prestigious William Beaumont hospital in Detroit Michigan. Following that, he had the privilege of completing a Neurointerventional fellowship with Dr. Charles Kerber and Dr. John Hesselink at University of California San Diego Medical Center.

Upon completing his fellowships, he developed a private practice program, one of the first in the country. Not only caring for the community and practicing at multiple hospitals but also actively educating physicians as to the minimally invasive procedures that can benefit patients, shorten hospital stays and minimize side effects. As HMOs' are significant part of our community, he had also been very successful in establishing a busy neurointerventional practice at Kaiser Hospital. This has involved starting from the very basic concept of patient care: teaching support staff, establishing protocols, acquiring equipment, designing angiogram rooms, and of course patient treatment and follow up. This private practice experience allows him to understand the obstacles of practicing in a non-academic setting.

Dr. Pakbaz is the former Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery and Chief of Neurointerventional Surgery at UCSD University of California San Diego. He is currently with Scripps Health and along with his partner Dr. Ammirati has developed the largest stroke treatment programs in San Diego.

Kovey Kovalan

Technology Advisor

Kovey Kovalan is an inventor and innovator with a passion for technology in the areas of visualization, artificial intelligence and high performance computing cloud. He bootstrapped, built and patented VoXcell Cloud technology and deployed it at early adopter commercial settings. His past work experience include Lead Software Developer for 3D Medical Imaging at Fujifilm Medical System, Principal Engineer at ORICON acquired by Lockheed Martin, and others. He carries a Master in Computer and Information Science degree from The Ohio State University. Kovey Kovalan grew up in Malaysia and came to the US to further his education. Graduating from The Ohio State University with a Masters in Computer and Information Science led him to multiple software engineering positions, one of which landed at Fujifilm Medical Systems.

When the opportunity to provide better care for patients emerged, he left a stable career to pursue a lifelong calling to become an entrepreneur. VoXcell Cloud was founded in 2007 when the US economy began to tank. Under his leadership, he bootstrapped to build the technology platform using consulting income, personal savings including for retirement, funds from family and friends, and a prestigious National Science Foundation grant. He obtained seven patents in the US, Europe and Japan, FDA clearance, and HIPAA compliance for the technology. It has been honored with North America Technology Innovation Award from Frost and Sullivan. He was invited and participated in Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) Innovation Summit. The AMD Innovation Summit showcases high growth software companies, including the latest in next generation gaming, Big Data and datacenter technologies. AMD is the second-largest supplier to Intel in the market for x86-based microprocessors. Both AMD and its competitor NVIDIA have dominated the graphics processing unit (GPU) market. In summary, he has built a custom artificial intelligence cloud for visualization using gaming technology for managing, viewing, and sharing large records online that solves critical challenges in multiple markets, including healthcare market, cloud gaming and augmented reality. Customers are currently using and paying for the system and he can now grow the business by scaling sales.
